EMDR Therapy
At LIV Mental Wellness, we offer online EMDR therapy for women in Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan who are carrying experiences their body hasn’t fully processed. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps your brain reprocess stuck memories, trauma, and distressing experiences so they lose their emotional charge. Instead of just talking about what happened, EMDR works at the level where the reaction actually lives.
When something happened years ago and your body still reacts like it just happened, talk therapy can only go so far.
You can understand what happened. You can name the pattern. But understanding alone doesn’t change the way your chest tightens or your thoughts spiral when something triggers that old response.
EMDR therapy works differently. It helps your brain reprocess the memories and experiences that are keeping your nervous system stuck.
At LIV Mental Wellness, our EMDR therapists work with women across Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan who are ready to move past the things that insight alone hasn’t been able to shift.

Who Can Benefit From EMDR Therapy?
When something painful or overwhelming happens, your brain will usually process it over time. But sometimes a memory gets stuck. Instead of fading into the past, it stays active in your body. That is why something from years ago can still make your chest tight, your thoughts spiral, or your mood shift without warning.
EMDR helps your brain finish processing those stuck experiences. Your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds) while you briefly hold the memory in mind. This helps your brain shift the experience from something that still feels like a threat to something that simply happened. The memory stays. The grip it has on you loosens.
EMDR therapy is especially helpful for those navigating:
- Phobias or intense avoidance patterns that limit daily life
- Grief that feels unresolved or stuck, even when time has passed
- Disturbing memories or flashbacks that surface without warning
- Emotional responses in relationships that feel bigger than the moment warrants
If these experiences resonate, know this:
When something from the past still has a grip on how you feel today, that is not a failure of willpower. The memory is stored in a way that keeps the reaction alive. EMDR works at that level.

Patterns That EMDR Therapy Can Help Shift
- Hypervigilance and constant scanning for threat, even in safe situations
- Emotional flooding or shutdown during conflict with a partner
- A deep sense of not being good enough that logic cannot seem to touch
- People-pleasing and self-abandonment rooted in early relational experiences
- Avoidance of specific situations, places, or sensations tied to past experiences
- Sleep disruption connected to unresolved distress or nightmares
- Difficulty trusting others or yourself, especially in close relationships
- Birth trauma and perinatal PTSD
EMDR can reach patterns that other approaches sometimes circle around without resolving.

How EMDR Therapy Works
EMDR follows a structured eight-phase protocol. At LIV, our therapists adapt the pace and integration to each person. EMDR is available virtually across Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, and research supports its effectiveness in online delivery.
Here is what actually happens in the process:
Building Safety and Readiness
Before any processing begins, your therapist helps you build internal resources for managing distress. This includes grounding techniques and a clear understanding of what to expect. You will not be asked to process anything until you feel ready and your therapist assesses that your nervous system can hold it.
Identifying Target Memories
Together, you and your therapist identify the specific memories, experiences, or beliefs driving your current symptoms. This is not a general life review. It is precise. You name the memories that still carry a charge and the negative beliefs attached to them.
Bilateral Stimulation and Reprocessing
During reprocessing, your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation while you hold the target memory in mind. This might be following a dot on a screen, tapping alternately on your knees, or listening to alternating tones through headphones. The stimulation helps your brain move the memory from its stuck, reactive state to a processed, integrated state.
Installing New Beliefs
As the distress around a memory decreases, your therapist helps you strengthen a more accurate belief about yourself. Where you once felt “I am not safe” or “I am not good enough,” you begin to genuinely feel something different. This is not positive affirmation. It is your brain arriving at a belief that matches reality.
Ongoing Integration Between Sessions
Between sessions, your brain continues processing. Your therapist will check in on what came up and adjust the plan as needed. Some people notice shifts quickly. Others need more time with stabilization before moving into processing. Both are normal, and the pace is always collaborative.

Why Work With
LIV Mental Wellness
EMDR is a powerful approach on its own, and at LIV, it becomes part of something more specific. Our therapists combine EMDR with attachment-based, somatic, cognitive, and nervous-system-informed frameworks. That means the reprocessing work is not happening in isolation. It is supported by an understanding of how your patterns formed relationally and how your body learned to protect itself.
Many of the people we work with arrive at EMDR after years of talk therapy. They understand their history, they can name the wound, and they are frustrated that the understanding has not translated into lasting relief. EMDR, the way LIV practices it, is built for exactly that gap. The goal is not more insight. The goal is your body actually learning something new.

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR Therapy
Can EMDR therapy be done online?
Yes. EMDR adapts well to virtual sessions. Bilateral stimulation is delivered through a dot moving on your screen, self-tapping, or audio tones through headphones. Research supports the effectiveness of online EMDR, and many clients find they actually feel more grounded processing from their own space.
What is the difference between EMDR and talk therapy?
Talk therapy focuses on understanding and making meaning of your experiences through conversation. EMDR focuses on changing how a memory is stored in the brain. You do not need to describe every detail of a memory for EMDR to work. The bilateral stimulation helps the brain reprocess the memory at a neurological level, which is why people often notice shifts that talking about the experience alone did not produce.
Both are effective, and our EMDR therapists typically use a blend of talk therapy and EMDR therapy to help clients reach their goals for therapy.
Can EMDR help with anxiety, or is it only for trauma?
EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, but it is now widely used for anxiety, phobias, panic, grief, performance anxiety, and negative self-beliefs. If your current distress connects to a past experience or a belief that got locked in early, EMDR can help. Your therapist will assess whether EMDR is the right fit during your initial sessions.
How long does EMDR therapy typically take?
This varies. Some people process a single-incident trauma in 6 to 12 sessions. Complex or layered trauma often takes longer, sometimes 6 months or more. The first several sessions focus on stabilization and building resources before any active reprocessing begins. Your therapist will work with you to set a pace that feels manageable.
Do I have to relive my trauma during EMDR?
Not necessarily. EMDR does not require you to narrate the full story of what happened. You hold the memory in mind briefly while bilateral stimulation guides the brain’s natural processing. Your therapist will prepare you with coping strategies before reprocessing begins, and sessions are paced so you stay within your window of tolerance. The goal is to reduce the charge around the memory, not to re-traumatize.
What if I am not sure EMDR is the right approach for me?
That is a common and reasonable question. At LIV, we encourage new clients to start with a free 20-minute consultation where you can describe what you are working through and ask questions. Your therapist can help determine whether EMDR, another modality, or a combination is the best fit. You do not need to commit to a specific approach before starting.

Shifts That Can Happen Through EMDR Therapy
Here are the specific shifts clients often describe after doing EMDR therapy:
- Reduced Emotional Charge: Memories remain, but they no longer trigger intense, overwhelming feelings. Clients often say, "I know it happened, but it doesn't bother me like it used to".
- Increased Emotional Regulation: Clients report a greater ability to manage stress and stay present, rather than dissociating or falling into old reactive patterns.
- Shift in Perspective: Negative self-beliefs (e.g., "I am powerless," "It was my fault") shift to positive, empowered beliefs (e.g., "I am safe," "I did the best I could").
- Neutralized Triggers Sensations: Physical, "knee-jerk" reactions to triggers - like a pit in the stomach or a racing heart - fade over time.
- Reduced Intrusive Thoughts: A significant decrease in the frequency of flashbacks, nightmares, and involuntary, distressing thoughts.
EMDR creates change at the level where the reaction actually lives. That means the shifts tend to show up not just in how you think, but in how your body responds, how you feel in relationships, and what you believe about yourself.
