Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy
in Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan

At LIV Mental Wellness, we offer Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS therapy) to help women understand their inner emotional system, calm the constant push and pull between parts, and reconnect with their compassionate Self so they can feel more grounded, confident, and at peace in everyday life

You want to feel calm and confident inside, so why does it seem like you’re always at war with yourself?

You’ve tried quieting self-criticism, pushing past anxiety, or numbing just to get through the day, but those inner battles keep pulling you back. One part of you wants to rest, another part insists you should do more, and another still carries the weight of old emotional wounds.

It can feel like your parts are working against each other. This inner conflict leaves you feeling exhausted, disconnected, and unsure of yourself.

Through IFS therapy for women, you’ll learn to understand and heal your inner system, so your parts begin to work with you instead of against you. At LIV Mental Wellness, our therapists guide you toward self-compassion, clarity, and emotional balance, helping you lead with your calm and confident Self.

Who Can Benefit From IFS Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapy approach built on the idea that your inner world is like a family – made up of different parts, each with its own voice, feelings, and intentions. Some parts step in to keep you safe, others work hard to protect you from pain, and some still carry the weight of old wounds. Beneath them all is your Self – a steady, compassionate core that can help those parts heal.

IFS therapy is especially helpful for women navigating:

How Parts Might Show Up In Daily Life:

All of these parts serve a purpose, even when their strategies don’t feel helpful. IFS therapy helps these parts step out of extreme roles and find new, healthier ways to support you.

How Internal Family Systems Therapy Works

IFS therapy is based on a simple but powerful truth: you are not broken, you are patterned. Every part of you developed for a reason, often as a way to protect you. And beneath those parts, there is a Self that is calm, compassionate, and capable of leading your system.

In practice, IFS therapy looks like:

Together with your therapist, you’ll learn to notice how your parts show up in your thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and behaviours. For example, you might recognize the critic that floods you with shame after a mistake, or the achiever that keeps you endlessly busy. We explore these parts at a pace that feels safe, always with choice and collaboration.
As you build awareness of your parts, your therapist will help you connect with your Self – the calm, grounded state beneath all the noise. From this place, you can meet your parts with compassion and curiosity instead of judgment or fear. Many clients describe this as a relief, like finally finding solid ground inside themselves.

Once a part trusts that your Self can lead, it can begin to let go of extreme roles. For example, a perfectionist part might ease its grip once it feels assured that you are safe even when things aren’t flawless. A younger part carrying shame may finally feel cared for, instead of silenced. Over time, your parts can shift into healthier roles, working with you instead of against you.

Why “Internal Family Systems”? Because just like in a family, each part has its own role, and they sometimes clash. In IFS therapy, we help your parts build trust in your Self as the leader of the system, creating more inner harmony and less conflict.

Frequently Asked Questions About IFS Therapy

IFS is a therapeutic model that sees the mind as an “internal family” of different parts, each with their own roles, feelings, and fears. Some protect you from pain, some push you to achieve, and some still carry old wounds. Beneath them all is your Self – a calm, compassionate core. In therapy, you learn how to lead your inner system with more clarity and compassion, instead of feeling pushed around by different parts.
Not necessarily. Many clients come in skeptical but quickly realize how natural it feels to describe their inner experience this way. Often, people already say things like, “Part of me wants to… but another part feels…” IFS simply builds on language you might already use to make sense of yourself.
In talk therapy, you might focus on analyzing thoughts or problem-solving. IFS goes deeper by directly engaging with the parts of you that drive those thoughts and behaviours. For example, instead of only challenging perfectionistic thinking, you might learn why a perfectionist part works so hard to protect you – and then help it take on a healthier role. This can create more lasting shifts than insight alone.

Yes. IFS is widely used for trauma recovery, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other concerns. It allows you to process painful memories without needing to retell every detail. Many clients describe it as gentler than exposure-based approaches, since you stay connected to your Self throughout the process. IFS also integrates well with nervous system tools, EMDR, and mindfulness practices.

There’s no set timeline. Some clients feel relief after just a few sessions as parts begin to soften, while others find that steady progress over several months helps them transform long-standing patterns. Your therapist will pace the work with you so it feels sustainable and supportive.

Yes. At LIV, we provide IFS therapy virtually across Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Online sessions allow for flexibility and comfort, and the IFS process translates well to video calls.
