Therapy for Perfectionism & Self-Criticism
At LIV Mental Wellness, we support women who hold themselves to impossibly high standards and want to break free from perfectionism and self-criticism. Through warm, compassionate online therapy across Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, we help you find peace within yourself.
You’re capable, driven, and thoughtful - so why do you always feel like you’re falling short?
You push yourself to do everything right, yet no matter how much you accomplish, it never feels like enough. Maybe you replay conversations, overthink every decision, or measure your worth by how much you do for others.
You want to relax, feel confident, and finally silence that inner critic, but the voice in your head keeps saying, “You should be doing more.”
At LIV Mental Wellness, our licensed therapists help women quiet that voice, understand where the pressure comes from, and build self-worth that doesn’t depend on being perfect.

The Hidden Cost of Perfectionism
Perfectionism therapy can help you release constant self-criticism, reconnect with your true self, and approach life with more self-compassion and balance. Because perfectionism might look like success from the outside, but inside, it can feel exhausting and lonely. Our online therapy for perfectionism and self-criticism helps you feel grounded, supported, and enough, just as you are.
Does this sound familiar?
- You overanalyze conversations, projects, or mistakes long after they’re over.
- You feel anxious when things don't feel under control.
- You take on too much because saying “no” feels like letting people down.
- You struggle to rest — even when you’re burnt out.
- You constantly think, “I should be doing better.”
- You fear failure or criticism, even when you know you’re capable.
- You have a hard time feeling proud of yourself, no matter how much you do.
If these experiences resonate, know this:
You’re not broken or weak. Perfectionism and self-criticism are learned survival strategies – and with the right support, they can be softened.

What Therapy for Perfectionism & Self-Criticism Can Help With
Therapy can help you uncover the deeper patterns driving your perfectionism and rebuild a healthier relationship with yourself. At LIV Mental Wellness, we help women work through:
- Chronic self-doubt or feelings of imposter syndrome
- People-pleasing and fear of disappointing others
- Over-responsibility or difficulty setting boundaries
- Burnout and emotional exhaustion
- Shame, guilt, or fear of making mistakes
- Trouble relaxing or letting go of control
Therapy offers a space to untangle these patterns – not by lowering your standards, but by freeing you from the belief that your worth depends on meeting them.

How Therapy Can Help
At LIV Mental Wellness, we use trauma-informed, integrative approaches that go beyond mindset work.
Together, we explore not just why you feel pressure to be perfect — but how your body and mind have learned to stay in that mode.
Our approach includes:
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
This approach helps you understand the protective parts of yourself that drive perfectionism and self-criticism, so they can relax their grip and work with you instead of against you.
Somatic Therapy
Through gentle body awareness and grounding techniques, you learn how to release tension, regulate your nervous system, and feel more at ease in your body.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps you build psychological flexibility by noticing unhelpful thoughts without getting caught in them, and taking actions that align with your values – even when things aren’t perfect.
Mindfulness & Self-Compassion Practices
These evidence-based tools help you soften the inner critic, develop a kinder inner voice, and stay connected to yourself in challenging moments.
Attachment & Relational Therapy
This approach helps you understand how your past relationships shaped your sense of worth and teaches you new, more supportive ways of relating to yourself and others.
Therapy isn’t about giving up on your goals – it’s about learning to pursue them without losing yourself in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Isn’t perfectionism just part of having high standards?
Not necessarily. Healthy striving motivates growth. Perfectionism, on the other hand, comes from fear – fear of failure, rejection, or not being enough. Therapy helps you find balance so you can pursue your goals without burning out.
What causes perfectionism?
It often develops as a way to stay safe or gain approval – especially if, growing up, love and validation were tied to achievement or being “the good one.” Therapy helps you identify where those patterns began and how to release them.
Can therapy really help with self-criticism?
Yes. Self-criticism feels like it keeps you on track, but it usually keeps you stuck. Therapy helps you build self-compassion, which research shows is more effective for motivation, confidence, and long-term growth.
Do I need to be in crisis to start therapy?
Not at all. Many clients come to therapy when they’re functioning well but feeling disconnected or overwhelmed by pressure. You don’t need to wait until things fall apart to start feeling better.
What if I’m not sure this is the right fit?
That’s completely okay. We offer a complimentary, no-pressure meet & greet so you can ask questions and see if working with someone on our team feels like the right fit for you.
