Couples Therapy
in Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan
At LIV Mental Wellness, we offer online couples therapy for partners navigating disconnection, recurring conflict, hard transitions, or the question of staying together.
We help couples across Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan understand the pattern underneath the conflict and rebuild a relationship that feels worth being in.
Relationships shape how life feels day to day. They're worth paying attention to.
Some couples come to therapy to make something good even better. Some come to work through something that’s been wearing the relationship down. Some come uncertain about what comes next, or already moving toward something different. All of those belong here.
Couples therapy at LIV helps you understand what’s actually happening between you, and decide what you want to build from here.
At LIV Mental Wellness, our couples therapy meets you where you are – whether you’re building your relationship, rebuilding it, or figuring out what comes next.

Couples Therapy Isn't Just for Crisis
Some couples come to therapy because the patterns between them have gotten harder than they know how to handle on their own.
Some come because the relationship is mostly working, and they want it to keep working.
Some come holding a question they haven’t fully said out loud yet.
All of those are real reasons to be here.
Couples therapy gives you space to slow down and see what’s really going on. You start to notice patterns and understand each other better. From there, you learn to respond differently, instead of falling back into the same patterns.
Does this sound familiar?
- You keep having a version of the same argument, and "talking it out" doesn't seem to work anymore
- One of you is doing more of the emotional labour and the resentment is starting to surface
- Conversations can shut down or turn defensive within minutes
- You've stopped saying things to keep the peace, and the distance is growing
- You've already separated, and you want to do it well, especially if there are children involved
- The relationship is mostly working, and you want to protect it before life pulls it harder
- You're navigating a hard transition, like a new baby, blended family, illness, betrayal, or separation, and the relationship is taking the weight
- You're co-parenting through tension and worried about what your kids are absorbing
- One of you is wondering whether to stay, and you want to be sure either way before you decide
- One partner is ready for therapy, the other is hesitant, and you're not sure how to start
If any of these experiences resonate, know this:
You’re not alone, and it doesn’t have to stay this way.

How Couples Therapy at LIV Works
At LIV Mental Wellness, our couples work is trauma-informed, attachment-aware, and grounded in real life. Sessions are virtual across Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Most couples meet weekly or every other week to start, then space out as things shift.
We get to know both of you
Your therapist hears from each partner about what’s been happening, what each of you wants from this work, and the history that brought you here.
We map the pattern
Most couples get stuck in patterns they didn’t choose. Once you both see it, conversations feel less like attacks and more like something you can work through together.
We don’t just focus on what’s said - we focus on what's felt
Conflict isn’t just about logic. Your therapist helps you notice what’s happening emotionally in the relationship, so you can stay connected instead of getting stuck in the same reactions.
We give you tools that work outside the room
Real change happens between sessions. Your therapist will hand you specific things to try, language to use, and ways to interrupt old patterns in real time. Each session builds on what worked, what didn’t, and what you noticed.

Why Work With
LIV Mental Wellness
The relationships closest to you shape how life feels day to day. They affect how you fall asleep, how mornings feel, and how it feels to walk through your own front door.

Our couples therapists are trained in approaches that hold up in real relationships, including Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Internal Family Systems. We also support couples through infidelity, narcissistic dynamics, perinatal strain, and separation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Therapy
What if my partner isn't sure they want therapy?
This is one of the most common ways couples therapy starts. One person is ready, the other is hesitant, ambivalent, or quietly skeptical. You can book a free 20-minute consultation alone, with both of you, or have your partner book separately first. Our therapists are practiced at meeting hesitant partners where they are without pressure. Reluctance at the start doesn’t predict how the work goes.
How is couples therapy different from individual therapy?
Individual therapy focuses on your inner world, your patterns, your history, and your nervous system. Couples therapy focuses on the dynamic between two people and the patterns the relationship itself has created. Both are useful, and they often work well alongside each other. Some couples find it most helpful when one or both partners do individual work in parallel with couples therapy.
Does the relationship have to be in crisis to start couples therapy?
No. Some of the most useful couples work happens before things get hard, with partners who want to strengthen what’s already working, prepare for a transition together, or address small patterns before they grow. Couples therapy can be preventative, restorative, or anywhere in between.
Do you work with couples who are separating or divorcing?
Yes. We offer discernment-focused work for couples deciding whether to separate, and ongoing support for couples who have decided to separate and want to do it as well as possible, especially when children are involved. Julia is specifically trained in co-parenting with a difficult ex and reunification work.
Is online couples therapy as effective as in-person?
Research consistently shows online couples therapy is comparably effective to in-person work for the majority of presenting concerns. Many couples actually find it easier, no commute, no childcare logistics, and you can do sessions from two different locations if you’re navigating a separation or living apart.
How long does couples therapy usually take?
Most couples notice meaningful shifts within four to eight sessions, though this varies depending on what you’re working through.
How much does couples therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance?
Couples sessions are $200 per hour, prorated for longer sessions. Most extended health plans cover psychotherapy or counselling delivered by a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Clinical Counsellor, including Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, and most major Canadian insurers. We provide receipts after each session for direct submission to your provider. Coverage varies by plan, so check your benefits coverage for “psychotherapy” or “couples therapy” to confirm your reimbursement amount.
